The imperial cities and the north are pleasant in spring and autumn but can be uncomfortably hot in midsummer. The Atlas Mountains stay cool even in summer and can be cold and snowy in winter. The Sahara is best outside the peak summer heat, and desert nights get cold year-round — pack a warm layer even for a summer trip.
Light, breathable layers for the day and a warm layer for desert or mountain evenings. Comfortable walking shoes for medinas with uneven cobblestones. Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) travels better in smaller towns and at religious sites. A scarf or shawl is useful against sun, wind and dust.
Cash is still king in souks, small riads and rural areas, while cards are widely accepted in hotels and larger restaurants in the main cities. It's worth carrying some local currency in small notes for markets, tips and taxis. Tipping is customary for guides and drivers — modest and appreciated rather than mandatory.
Morocco is welcoming but conservative in smaller towns. Ask before photographing people, dress modestly outside beach resorts, and expect to be invited to bargain in souks — it's part of the culture, not a trick. Friday afternoons are quieter, especially around mosques, as it's the main day for prayer.
Local prepaid SIM cards are easy to buy at the airport or in any city and generally offer solid data coverage in cities and along main routes. Coverage can thin out in remote desert or mountain stretches — download offline maps and let people back home know you may be briefly unreachable during those legs.
Morocco is a popular, generally safe destination for tourists, but ordinary precautions apply: watch your belongings in crowded markets, use licensed taxis or arranged transport at night, and stick to bottled or filtered water when unsure of the source.
